killed newtown, conn.. here is what we know at this hour. connecticut school. students massacred in their emotion. developing news at five. more than a dozens children shot and killed at an elementary in new town, connecticut. tonight many questions remain, but here is what wepam gives us the latest here is what we know about shooting in new town, connecticut at this hour. 27 the gunman. 20 of the victims are young children. police are questioning the brother of the shooter. and the gunmans mother has been found dead in his home. catherine heenan is standing >>catherine: newtown is 80 miles northeast of new york city. the scene of the shooting, is a relatively wealthy community founded 3=hundred years ago, just after nine this morning, it became the scene of one of the country's >> i just got a message saying there was an unconfirmed shooting >> we immediately jumped in the car and came down here >>catherine: parents arriving at the school found a nightmare scene. >> "i just heard the

principal was shot and killed. i heard some kids were shot. a teacher mrs. hammons was shot." >>catherine: the shooter apparently arrived in this car, parked outside the main entrance. he began firing as soon as he entered the building. >> pop, pop, pop in the hall. and they all heard it. there were about seven people in the meeting room. they heard that sound in the hall. and they -- she said three people went out into the hall, the principal, the vice principal and the school psychologist. and t only one person came back, which was the vice principal, who was shot in the leg or the foot. >>catherine: police responding to 911 calls found dozens of bodies, including the principal and psychologist. >> there were three children that came out. one of them was -- had a very bloody face. one of the cops said it was the worst things he's seen in his entire career. >>catherine: officers frantically searched for the gunman. >> we heard screaming. a police came in, and was like, is he in here? then he ran out. then somebody yelled, get to a safe place. >> we saw police officers and we heard them on the roof. >>catherine: the little children were told to close their eyes and hold hands as they were evacuated. teachers did not want them to see that had happened in their school. >> you know, all these

parents were waiting for their children to come out a they thought that they were, you know, still alive. there's 20 parents that were just told that their children are dead. it was awful. police confirm the gunman was dead at the scene, apparently by his own hand. his mother's body was later found at his home. she was a teacher at the school. >>catherine: this is just mind blowing. it's unbelievable. >> it doesn't even seem real. it just does not seem like it's even possible. everyone will carry this around forever. this town will never be the same. i'm sure. when i find myself talking with other people i can't believe we're comparing this with some of the worst tragedies in the united states. the columbine, the virginia shooting." >>catherine: tonight --- vigils are being held across the country for the shooting victims. this is one of them -- happening right now in new-town connecticut - where it all happened. with details on the scene of the crime - grant lodes is here with the latest. grant? >> here's a map of the school. very rural area.in indications are the gunman came in the main entrance here. he entered two rooms in the school.started shooting. the principal.assistant principal and school

psychologist were meeting in this area here. when they heard the gun-fire.they came out into the hallway. all three were shot. a total of 20 children and 6 adults died in the shooting.not far from the school. is the suspect's home.where he reportedly lived with this mother. sources say the suspect shot his mother early this morning before going to the school and killing 26 people there. meanwhile.two states away.police today are questioning the suspect's brother uin hoboken new jersey. polcie saying the brother is being very cooperative, and says he has not been in touch with his brother in recent years. a visibly shaken president obama addressed the nation this afternoon. it was >>catherine: of sometimes difficult for him to get through his statement. he says he's reacting tonight - not as a president - but as a parent. here's what he said.

>> we have endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years and each time i hear the i reacted not as if president, but as anybody else would, as a parent. that was especially true today. i know there is not a parent in america who does not feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those that died today were children. beautiful, little kids between five and 10 years old. they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations. weddings. kids of their own.

iman the fall and were also teachers-among-the fallen where teachers. our hearts are broken today for the parents and the grandparents, sisters, brothers of these little children. and for the families of the adults that were lost. our hearts are broken for the hearts of the survivors as well. as blessed as the heart to have the children home tonight they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early. there is no word if that will ease their pain. as a country, we have been through this too many times. if it is a elementary school and newton, conn., or a shopping mall and connecticut, or a temple in wisconsin or a movie and all

aurora, these neighborhoods our our neighborhoods and these are our children. we are going to come together and take meaningful action to prevent tragedies like this regardless of the politics. this evening, michele and i will do will every. and i would do is hug our children a little bit tighter. we will tell them that we love them and remind them how deeply we love each other. there are families who cannot do that tonight and they need all of us a break now. the days to come, the community needs to us to be as our best as americans and i will do everything in my power as a president to help. while nothing can fill the space of a lost child, love one. all of us can extend a hand to those in need to remind that we are

now with more on the suspect. dan what do we know. >> more and more is trickling out. but very slowly. recap the shooting, we know the suspect adam lanza is 20 years old. and we know he is now dead. from a self inflicted gunshot wound. his body discovered at the school law enforcement officials speaking on the condition of anonynmity say he suffers from a personality disorder and is somewhat autistic.. we also know he lived with his mother in connecticut. and that the mother was a teacher at the school. and she too is presumed to be dead. now adam lanza also had a brother named ryan. this is video of ryan. he's 24 years old, and he was taken into custody and questioned by police, but is not believed to be involved in the shooting. now neighbors of the suspect say they know little about him. but reporters did speak with

one of adam lanza's classmates. now to another developing story. >> he was just a kid, just a kid. a bit antisocial. he was not a troublemaker, and definitely not. and to the gist othat's just kind of that e would against his mother can you wrap your head from that? >> i do not know anybody that would do anything like that. >> your general sense is what? this is unspeakable.

citizens including the columbine massacre in colorado. eric harris killed 12 classmates. terry and eventually killed themselves in the school library. today, the shooting is the second deadliest and the country. only by the virginia tech that happened in 2007. a 23 year-old man killed 32 people and itself on campus. it was only six months ago when a gunman walked into a war, colorado's during a showing of the new vet member w into all rock, colorade aurora movie theater. and even earlier this week, this shopping mall outside of portland, oregon. we

>>pam: a gunman opened fire in a connecticut elementary school today, killing more than two dozen people, including 20 students. as a parent, how do you explain a tragedy like this to your children ? lisa sylvester has >> if there's an image that sums up this story it is this... any parent out there can relate. psychiatrist charles raison is with the university of arizona's college of medicine >> "how do you wrap your mind around something like this? with a good deal of heartbreak and with the understanding that it's gonna take awhile and that there will be people that were closely impacted by this who will never wrap minds around this. you know, human minds are not infinite and, you know, this is now appearing to be the world school yard catastrophe in history and so there's gonna be a huge long-term fallout for this that is gonna also impact people's emotional well being and we need to gear ourselves up for that fallout because it's coming because this is a horrible thing." >> the news out of newtown is traumatic for parents...and for

children... this happened at a school where kids are supposed to feel safe. >> "how do you explain this to children? well, again, it depends on the age of the child but i think simple, forthright explanations are the best, and i think....one of things that i tell children is there are some bad people in the world and sometimes bad people do really terrible things, and a terrible thing has happened and there have been some children killed and this is terrible, but you're safe...and you're safe and you're in a situation now where you're not gonna be harmed." the american academy of pediatrics offers this advice: take into account the age of the child and provide basic information without offering details that may only alarm them.

we continue our coverage of the shooting that killed 20 children today in conneticut. as the details surrounding the shooters motive continue to come in. hill and the white house. news at 6 continues. we're following the developing story elementary school shooting in new town, connecticut. 27 people are dead -- his mother -- a school teacher. 20 of the victims are young children. the shooters older brother is being questioned about the shooting. police also say two more bodies have been found.

one in hoboken, new jersey -- and one in the victims home. both appear to be family members. now lets head to dan kerman. live in the newsroom with the latest on the shooting suspect. >> we know the suspect adam we know he is now dead. from a self inflicted gunshot at the school law enforcement officials speaking on the condition of anonynmity say he suffers from a personality disorder we also know he lived with his mother who was a teacher at the school. he is believed to have killed her at their home before driving to the school in her car. he had three weapons with him, but left one in the car. all of those weapons are believed to be registered to the mother. now adam lanza also had a brother named ryan. this is video of ryan. he's 24 years old, and he was taken into custody and questioned by police, but is not believed to be involved in the shooting. he told authorities he has not been in touch with his brother for 2 years. now neighbors of the suspect say they know little about adam lanza. but reporters did speak with one of his classmates. >> he was just a kid. never
